Greetings

My name is Matthew McGovern.  An Information Technology professional. I have been working in the industry for 3 years with experience in Linux system administration, hardware and operational backup, restoration and replication systems.  Have a look around the page, or have a look at my github and dockerhub, more about me can also be found below and in my blog.

Education

II have an ACS-accredited higher education degree; bachelor of Information Technology. This  used CompTIA+ resources. and my major was Network Security.

Currently working through acloudguru courses in redhat, ansible, python and docker/kubernetes.

I have studied Virtualization, containers and hypervisor management, automation and scripting, Web development, physical and virtual server hosting and administration and database administration.

Experience

I have been working in the IT industry for a software company for the past 3 years. In my role as a cloud technical engineer, I have experience managing our hosted software stack; using our private cloud with VMware virtualization and rancher-managed docker containers. Currently working on a project involving deployment of kubernetes nodes and clusters.

I have some Data center experience, installing hardware and initial configuration for our backup systems.

My previous experience in management roles has left me with some of the ‘softer’ side of IT skills, such as managing a team, people networking skills, vendor interactions and price negotiations, conflict resolution, rostering, and management of wage cost.

Interests

I love to use Linux and explore the command line, finding simple solutions with enough visibility to gain an understanding of the complete process. My interests include Linux system administration,  infrastructure automation and experimenting with Proxmox and virtualization and docker containers, monitoring, and scripting on my homelab.

My homelab began as an old Laptop with ubuntu, where I learnt the Linux filesystem and CLI. Since then it has expanded to a HA clustered proxmox host setup with shared storage running a number of linux VMs.

Along with a managed switch and a consumer grade NAS. I host my own dockerised applications and websites as a way to learn more about python, go and bash scripting.

So far with my lab I have played with backup systems and  scripts, Rancher, Wireguard VPN, DNS servers, file servers, NFS shared storage, Media servers and USB/Video device passthroughs, reverse proxy and SSL certificates with grafana, telegraf/influxdb and prometheus monitoring using custom dashboards for my UPS and NAS. See some of this in the blog section.

Outside of IT, I love to eat well, play basketball and spend time with my family.

About

In early 2019 I decided that I would change careers to pursue my dreams of working in the IT industry.

I love solving problems and find satisfaction in completing difficult tasks. I often lose track of time when studying or working on personal projects. I have always had a passion for technology and computers, configuring networks and interest in how computers and software works has been a hobby of mine since a I was young.

Recently this has expanded to include virtualization, containerization and home labbing, automation and scripting.

It was an obvious choice to follow the IT career path, while studying I have found that I am well suited for self-learning, I am currently working in the industry deep in linux terminals all day and couldn't be happier, with this kind of work. I hope to populate a blog section with my home and self learning projects soon.
